What Are the Different Eyelid Surgery Procedures Offered for Asian Eyes?
Dr. Sung brings decades of experience performing the following types of doouble eyelid surgeries below for New Yorkers of Asian descent:
-
Double eyelid surgery (upper-blepharoplasty) - The most commonly performed eyelid procedure for Asian individuals. Dr. Sung makes a thin incision to remove unnecessary tissue, enhancing the upper eyelid crease to create the appearance of brighter eyes while maintaining an overall natural appearance. It can also help improve the field of vision.
-
Epicanthoplasty - The procedure focuses on the corners of your eyes. Dr. Sung strategically reduces the amount of surrounding skin to make the ends more defined. Epicanthoplasty often accompanies double eyelid surgery.
-
Ptosis - A condition where the upper eyelid droops over the eye—can affect individuals of all ages and ethnicities, including East Asians. Corrective surgery can enhance your appearance and address ptosis-related vision impairment.
-
Revision eyelid surgery - If you’re dissatisfied with past eyelid surgeries, there’s good news—it is possible to address common problems or concerns. Dr. Sung specialized in helping Asian patients who have come to him with issues such as non-incisional eyelid surgery failures, loss of folds, scarring and excessive rounding of the eye shape. He will examine the eyelids and advise on the best course of action.
Dr. Sung can craft an individualized treatment plan using one or more techniques to best meet the patient’s needs. We welcome you to visit us in our New York City office to discuss your specific goals for your Asian eye surgery.
How is Asian Eyelid Surgery Performed?
Whether it's double eyelid surgery or another procedure, Asian eyelid surgery usually takes about 45 minutes to two hours to complete. This procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery using local anesthesia. In some cases, anxious patients can opt for intravenous sedation to ease their concerns about undergoing the procedure.
What Can I Expect During My Asian Eyelid Surgery Recovery?
After Asian eyelid surgery, patients may be advised to apply lubricating drops or ointment and use cold compresses to aid healing. Most patients return to work in a few days to a week but should avoid exercise and strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Stitches are usually removed after five to seven days. Most swelling and other side effects typically subside within two weeks, at which point patients can resume wearing contact lenses and makeup. It is recommended to decrease your screen time and wear dark sunglasses when outside for two weeks.
What Results Can I Expect After My Asian Eyelid Surgery?
Asian double eyelid surgery focuses on creating the ideal eye shape, determining the appropriate fold height, and correcting any associated ptosis.
Although there may be swelling and bruising around the eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own, and the eyelids will improve in appearance for up to a year. The scars from Asian double eyelid surgery and other Asian eyelid procedures are well-concealed and usually fade with time until they are virtually undetectable. Although the eyelids are still subject to aging, Asian eyelid surgery produces beautifully natural and long-lasting results.
